Once a major center of the Chandela rulers, this region is among those areas of Bundelkhand where history remains a part of local culture. Located in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, Mahoba's story is linked to the folk tales of Alha and Udal, whose heroism is still recounted in Bundelkhand's folk tradition.
An interesting feature of Mahoba is its large historical lakes. Built by the Chandela rulers, Madan Sagar and Kirat Sagar exemplify the water-conservation tradition of that era. The ancient Sun Temple at Rahiliya in Mahoba is listed as a centrally protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
