Jhansi was a stronghold of the Chandela kings.Jhansi FortOne of the most famous historical monuments of the city is the Jhansi Fort, which was built by Raja Veer Singh Dev of Orchha in 1613 AD. Rani Lakshmibai fought valiantly against the British in the 1857 War of Independence, due to which Jhansi became a symbol of courage, self-respect and sacrifice in Indian history.

Jhansi's geographical location makes it a major center of Bundelkhand. The city lies in the confluence of the Pahuj and Betwa rivers and is well connected by road and rail to many major cities in the country.
